Time-domain representation of discrete-time signals and systems

3.1 Notation

A discrete-time signal x consists of a sequence of numbers denoted by x(n), or x(nT), where n is an integer index. The latter notation is usually reserved for sampled data sequences with a uniform sampling period of T seconds. The sampling process is discussed in more detail in a later chapter. If the sampling period is known or is not relevant to the interpretation of results, the subscript notation will be used.

3.2 Typical discrete-time signals

Several discrete-time signals are considered basic and important. More complex signals can be constructed from these elementary ones.
