The Microchip PIC family of microcontrollers is one of the oldest and most recognizable embedded hardware offerings available. Developed in the mid-1970s, the PIC was originally a simple 8-bit microprocessor for improving I/O performance. In the late 1980s, the original PIC was updated to be a programmable microcontroller with the addition of EPROM for storing program code and data. Today, Microchip offers a wide variety of PIC processors, from the venerable 8-bit microcontrollers to modern, fast 16-bit controllers capable of far more than their ancestors.
