12 Atmospheric Gases and Pollutants
The mixture of gases in the Earth’s atmosphere is vital for life. Without the relatively thin atmospheric layer, compared with the diameter of the Earth, life would not exist on Earth as it protects us from harmful radiation from space and provides oxygen (O2) we breathe. This O2 is generated by plants, including those on land and in the sea. In this chapter, we are looking at how we can use Earth Observation (EO) data to understand what is happening in the atmosphere and how it impacts the air we breathe, in particular linked to air pollution and climate change.
