In the United States and the United Kingdom, one in three adults is over the age of 50 and some of these will have visual problems. It would be folly to prevent these people from accessing your web site. Many e-commerce sites have seen a marked increase in sales after making their web sites accessible to the blind and partially sighted. This chapter mainly deals with methods of helping partially sighted and blind persons to explore web sites. The severely visually handicapped and the blind can use a screen reader (speaking browser) that turns the textual content of a web site into speech.
