Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the idea of the private enterprise, commonly referred to as a “business” or “company”, as the basic unit of organization in the field of management. After providing a general definition, this chapter presents a range of co-existing perspectives on businesses that managers frequently take. These vantage points include viewing businesses as structures for flows of money, as sets of interrelated activities, as legal forms, and as organizations of people.
