SCO UNIX Adopts the CDE Standard

In its most recent OS release, UnixWare 7, SCO UNIX joins the list of UNIX vendors who provide the CDE GUI as the default. It is worthwhile to learn this GUI because it is becoming available on more UNIX systems from different vendors.

Solaris contains a second GUI called the common desktop environment (CDE), which is based on the X Window System and the Motif Window Manager. Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Sun jointly contributed to the development of the CDE, so this same GUI is now found on their versions of UNIX: HP-UX, AIX, and Solaris. Other UNIX vendors also offer this GUI, providing a familiar environment on different UNIX platforms.
