Transferring Files Across the Network
The Telnet and rlogin commands provide a way for a remote user to access system resources, but not an effective way to transfer files across the network. These deficiencies are alleviated through the operation of the File Transfer Protocol (FTP).
The following section examines the operation of FTP and illustrates how it can be used to transfer files between UNIX hosts. FTP can operate both from the command line and interactively. Start by looking at using it interactively.
Starting FTP
1. | Log on to UNIX as any user, but not to the root account. At a shell prompt, enter the command ftp and press Enter.
