Subversion tracks changes for directories and file contents, but it also tracks changes for properties attached to files and directories. Properties each have a name and text or binary content. Subversion tracks properties just like file content, so you must commit changes to properties, you can revert changes you no longer want, and it’s possible for properties to be in conflict.

Subversion reserves properties whose names begin with svn: for special Subversion features. Ignoring files, enabling file locking, and setting up Subversion externals all use properties to tell Subversion how to behave.
