1. Introduction
This chapter discusses major strands in research on discourse which has been conducted within Systemic-Functional Linguistics (SFL). It does not attempt to give a complete survey either of the literature or of the different schools. The plural form “approaches” in the title does not refer to different “dialects” within the theory but rather to the various angles from which discourse has been approached within the model as it has been used over the years.
