CHAPTER AT A GLANCE
- The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in June 1972 at Stockholm (the capital of Sweden) is considered as the first world conference on the environment. It started a dialogue between the industrialised and the developing countries on the relation between Economic Growth and Environmental Degradation. It decided to create the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The World Environment Day (5th June) was also established by this very conference and the first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1973. The Earth Summit at Rio was held in 1992 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of this conference.
