Performance of Major Political Parties
- There were 31 States/UTs (22 States and 9 Union Territories) in India in 1977 and all of them went to poll in the General Elections that year for a total of 542 seats. The Congress was not able to get any seat in as many as 10 of them. Out of these 10, seven were in north India: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.
- The remaining 3 were Nagaland, Mizoram and Pondicherry.
- It was the first General Election for the state of Sikkim as it was included in the Union of India only in 1975. ...
