“Production is just an assembly-line to get the script onto the screen,” said William Goldman in his book Which Lie Did I Tell?. Like a lot of Goldman’s writing (except for his screenplays), it’s both nonsense and completely true at the same time. Production is much more than an assembly line – it really is where the film is forged. Forged is the right word, too – the materials get melted down (along with a scary amount of money), and through the sweat and tears of a lot of talented people, beaten into something wonderful.
