Repeat after us: Giving a talk isn’t about you; it’s about your audience. Just because you’re at the front of the room under the bright lights doesn’t mean you’re the focus. Now isn’t the time to show off your amazing intellect or your snazzy stock photography. Your presentation is for the benefit of the people who have given up two of their most precious resources: time and attention. Yes, your audience is probably there to see you and to learn your slant on the topic of the day, but remember that you’d feel pretty silly talking to an empty room.
