Lifestyle and features are often seen as the ‘softer’ end of the market… but don’t you believe it. Here we are talking hours of daytime television and radio involving profiles, magazine and consumer programmes. They require every bit as much journalism, no less effort and, sometimes, considerably more ingenuity than plain news. Heart-wrenching, televised agony columns in front of live audiences, fashion makeovers, DIY re-builds, cooking, history, pet shows and gardening programmes – these are the bedrock of the broadcasting day.
