16 Sexism, ageism, racism and disability
All of the above may make it more difficult to get a job. It shouldn’t, but let’s be realistic. Sadly, there probably isn’t a presenter alive who doesn’t feel that he or she has suffered from one of them. Frequently it is prejudice of such a subtle kind that even the person guilty of it is unaware of it. Networks can always defend themselves by claiming the on-air performers are there because they are ‘the best person for the job’ and it’s ‘what the public wants’.
The antipathy to offering jobs to these groups is often simply down to lack of imagination or ignorance. The bosses see the problems instead of adopting a ‘can do’ mentality.
