The concurrent programming constructs that we have studied use shared memory, whether directly or through a shared service of an operating system. Now we turn to constructs that are based upon communications, in which processes send and receive messages to and from each other. We will study synchronization in progressively looser modes of communications: in this chapter, we discuss synchronization mechanisms appropriate for tightly coupled systems (channels, rendezvous and remote procedure call); then we discuss spaces which provide communications with persistence; and finally we will study algorithms that were developed for fully distributed systems.
