8: Lubricants and their properties

Abstract

The importance of a lubricant in many tribological applications arises from its capability of ultimately reducing friction and preventing wear by forming a film between solid surfaces in mutual contact. Thus, the present chapter is focused on covering the different types of lubricants used in tribological systems. To understand the functionality of lubricants, a comprehensive discussion of their properties including chemical, physical, thermal, and visual properties is presented. Liquid lubricants including oils, ionic liquids, and aqueous and nonaqueous liquids are addressed. Following an overview of the lubrication mechanism and deposition methods of solid lubricants, various examples of these ...
