Abstract

It is assumed that the present chapter will serve as a focal point for those who are concerned with the tribology of nonmetallic materials. The differences between polymeric and metallic friction are discussed regarding the discrepancy in the viscoelastic behavior of polymers and the elastic–plastic behavior of metals. The mechanisms of wear are described, and the factors affecting friction and wear of polymers are extensively explained. The fundamentals of polymeric composites tribology and how various structures and compositions can affect their friction and wear behavior are explained.
