7: Lubrication and surface engineering

Abstract

In most all tribological systems, the main goal is to reduce friction and control wear between the contacting solid surfaces. This chapter introduces and discusses two typical methods, which are frequently applied to enhance tribological properties of engineering machinery, namely, lubrication and surface engineering techniques. The principle of lubrication is to introduce a substance, called lubricant, between the contacting surfaces to minimize friction and wear. The chapter reviews various aspects involved in fluid film lubrication such as fluid flow, Reynold's equation, Stribeck curve, and different types of fluid lubrication.
