Every profession has its own language, terms and ways of doing things. Estimating is no different. The trouble is, the terminology used for ostensibly the same thing is not always the same, nor are the same terms always used in a consistent manner. This is due in some part to the choice of terminology used in different industries or in other business processes with which the estimating process necessarily interfaces. It’s probably a good idea to define what we mean by certain terms as we discuss the practice or mechanics of compiling an estimate.
