What Is Contrast?
The different shades of gray arranged between the black shadow and white highlight point is called contrast in traditional photography and referred to as brightness in digital imaging. Pixel brightness can be made darker and lighter very simply and this allows the skillful user to separate and enhance different areas of the image to create a totally different visual balance.
