5. X.509 Digital Certificate

An X.509 certificate is a digital document (file) that uniquely identifies something connected to a network. It contains several things, depending on the type of certificate. X.509 is a standard that was part of the OSI X.500 Directory Service (the “authentication framework”). A digital certificate has the following items in it:

  • A Subject Distinguished Name that uniquely identifies a person, device, or computer (node), for example, CN=www.pkiedu.com, O=PKIEdu Inc., L=Frisco, ST=Texas, C=US
