Going Server-Side
Do you want to know if your friend is a lucky game developer? Ask him what his favorite programming language or platform is. Java fans are lucky: they can create their masterpieces using only the tool and language that they know—Java. They don’t need to learn something beyond it to start working over the game. PHP developers have a little bit less luck—their favorite language is intended only for server scripting, so they need to learn something else in order to make a shiny game client. They also have an option to pair with an ActionScript developer who has the opposite problem: they can’t write efficient server code with their favorite tool.
