2. Introducing Transparent Data Encryption

In this chapter we begin to look at Transparent Data Encryption (TDE). TDE was introduced in SQL Server 2005 as a way to encrypt your data. It remains part of SQL Server and pretty much unchanged right up to the latest versions.

For a long time TDE was only available in the enterprise edition of the product, but from SQL 2019 you can use it in the standard edition also. That makes it a tool that many of us who use SQL Server can utilize without any additional price tag.
