Monitoring is one of the most often overlooked aspects of SharePoint farm administration. Ironically, the reason for this is because most SharePoint server farms will run well for quite a while without regular monitoring. Unfortunately, the definition of well is far too broad to risk an organization's most valuable data. To most users, the system is either up or down.
