SharePoint taxonomy can be defined as the practice of classification to provide a hierarchal structure. SharePoint utilizes metadata and content types to build this structure. Sharing this information across site collections was difficult using SharePoint 2007. This required the creation of custom solutions to deploy the metadata and content types to multiple site collections. SharePoint 2010 introduced the managed metadata service, sometimes referred to as the taxonomy service. This service provides the framework for the creation of a content type hub.
