Recall from Section 4.2 that a gene is a locus (section of a chromosome) that is functional in the sense that it is responsible for some biological expression in the organism. For example, in Example 4.1 we discussed the bey2 gene, which is located on chromosome 15 in humans and is responsible for eye color. We are interested in knowing not only that a gene is on a particular chromosome but also its location on the chromosome. A genetic linkage map shows the order of genes on a chromosome and the relative distances between those genes. A genetic linkage map is not to be confused with a genome’s DNA sequence. ...
