Module 15

Process Monitoring

This book has largely focused on dynamics and feedback control (with other advanced strategies) of continuously measured output. In practice, there are often product properties or qualities that are not measured frequently enough to be used directly in a control loop. These infrequent measurements are sometimes directly related to a product value, so it is important that they be monitored to assure that they meet desired specifications.

After studying this module, the reader should be able to

  • Understand basic probability and statistics.

  • Create probability distribution charts.

  • Understand metrics to determine when quality objectives are satisfied.

  • Understand filtering versus smoothing.
