DRAFT IN FIRED HEATERS

Dad! What’s draft, anyway?

It’s the pressure difference between the firebox and the atmosphere, measured at the same elevation. That means that the pressure inside the furnace is below the pressure in the atmosphere. Hence, combustion air is sucked into the firebox through the burners!

Hmm? … OK, Dad! But what causes that draft? Our professor at LSU said draft is caused by the tendency of a heater to “suck-in” air. But what does that mean?

That’s not true! Draft is due to the temperature difference between the 600°F flue gas, and the 60°F ambient air!
