Diving into the Shallow End
Imagine enrolling in a class to learn a new sport, perhaps Irish Hurling. (This type of hurling involves a ball and bat.) You arrive at class on the first day excited to dive into this exotic new hands-on activity, only to be confronted by a long lecture on the theoretical foundation of hurling. Over the next fourteen weeks, the course proceeds in a similar fashion, with maybe a couple of contrived on-the-field exercises to reinforce the lectures.
