Music Clearance and Insurance

MUSIC RIGHTS

All music is subject to copyright protection unless it is in the public domain (see the next section). It is very important that before deciding on using a particular piece of music or a song in your film or video, you secure its clearance.

Clearance means determining who owns the copyright to a piece of music and negotiating a license to use that material for exhibition and distribution in specific territories and media in exchange for the payment of a fee to the copyright owner. If the clearance process is begun ahead of time, the producer can determine whether the budget can accommodate the price of a particular song or musical selection.
