Section 8 Interlude 1: What is Metadata?

Whenever a digital file is created, saved in a system, searched, converted, edited, used, or delivered, metadata plays a critical part. Metadata is a fundamental component for any production pipeline or delivery process whether it’s for gaming, film, or visual effects. It is used to describe, control, structure, or understand the content to which it is ascribed. Metadata is essentially “data about the data”. Without it, our productions would suffer in every conceivable way including extended production cycle times, compromised security, and even decreased creative expression.
