Relatively late in the planning process for Office 2003, the irresistible force of .NET crashed into the immovable object of Office. The Visual Studio Tools for Office was crafted from the debris. This chapter explains the concepts behind VSTO, how it works, what it can do (and cannot do) and discusses other ways of leveraging the .NET framework within Excel solutions. Note that this chapter applies to Visual Studio 2003, Office 2003 and VSTO 1.0, and all code samples are in Visual Basic.NET.
