Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) had a bad start with version 1.0. It was difficult to use, lacked significant capabilities, and suffered from major bugs. To make things worse, very few developers even understood what VSTO was really designed for. The next version, VSTO 2005, addressed many of the problems with version 1.0 and added more features to the toolset. A major update, called VS2005 Second Edition (SE), was later released. This update enabled developers to target Office 2007 and create application-level solutions.
