Configuring Existing FTP Sites

Newly created FTP sites will usually need some further configuration to meet the needs of an organization. Setting security, logging properties, and User Isolation all takes place in IIS Manager for the specific FTP site.

All of the basic permissions, binding information, and site information are available through menu options in the Actions pane for the FTP site. Bindings and basic settings were configured when the site was created but can be changed at any time. For example, changing the home folder location or the port the site answers on are just simple changes in these menus. But there are some advanced settings an administrator may want to change.

Home Directory

The home directory for an FTP site is set in the Basic settings for the site, found under the Actions pane. FTP Servers can be pointed to network shares as well as local directories. The key to this is providing access to the share for the authenticated FTP account or using “Connect as” to specify the user account with access to the share. If you use a share, the share permissions also come into play when determining the FTP user account's access to the FTP content.

FTP sites can use virtual directories in the same manner that websites can. Virtual directories provide two valuable functions for FTP sites: redirection from the forced directory structure of standard isolated user sites, and redirection to common folders for isolated users.
