8.3. Lay Out Your Page Layout
The Content Pages in a publishing site reside in the Pages library. Each page uses a preconfigured page layout for its visual rendering. Page layout pages reside in the Master Pages gallery and are sometimes referred to as page templates, since that is their function — to serve as templates of publishing pages being created by the content authors of the site.
8.3.1. Page Layouts That Come with SharePoint Server
Several page layout pages are provided, depending on which site template is chosen to create the site. All of them reside in the Master Page gallery (Site Settings Modify All Site Settings Master Pages and Page Layouts) with the extension .aspx, as shown in Figure 8-11.

By default, a content author can use any of the available page layouts to create a new page in the Pages library. However, a site collection designer or administrator can decide to make available only certain page layouts to the content creators. That's done using the Page Layout and Site Template Settings page, which can be accessed through Site Settings Page Layouts and Site Templates under the Look and Feel section.
