Information gathering is the first step in conducting a penetration test and is arguably the most important. After the conclusion of this phase, we should have a detailed map of our target network and understand the amount of effort required to conduct a complete assessment. In addition, we should be able to identify the types of systems within the network, including operating system (OS) information, which allows us to refine our staffing and tool selection for the remainder of the penetration test project.
