Appendix B. Installation and Software

The Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2 development environment requires multiple pieces of software and updates for the software. Improper installation and missing software are the two major causes for many of the problems encountered by developers new to the Windows Embedded CE environment. This appendix provides information regarding installation and the software needed to work through the exercises in the book.

Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2

The exercises in this book are written for CE 6.0 R2. The initial CE 6.0 was released in 2006. During November 2007, CE 6.0 R2 was released.

The CE 6.0 development tool, Platform Builder, is a plug-in for the Visual Studio 2005 IDE and does not function in the Visual Studio 2008 IDE.

Whether you purchased the full version of Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2 or received the evaluation version, Visual Studio 2005 Professional is provided as part of the CE 6.0 R2 software kit. For the evaluation version of the CE 6.0, an evaluation version of the Visual Studio 2005 Professional software kit is included.

On April 15, 2008, Microsoft introduced the SPARK program. Through hardware vendors participating in this program, you can purchase a low-cost Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2 hardware kit, with the full version of Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2 and Visual Studio 2005 software kit included.
