Using the Report Designer

The Report Designer is the SQL Server report development tool targeted toward developers. Using the Report Designer, developers can create flexible reports with sophisticated formatting and a high degree of user interactivity. Reports that are graphically composed using the Report Designer are saved in a special XML dialect called report definition language (RDL). These RDL files are, in turn, deployed to a Reporting Services server and rendered to users that request them. The Report Designer is a component of the Business Intelligence Developer Studio, and hence a component of Visual Studio. This tool has been significantly enhanced for Reporting Services 2008.
