Once you start recording actuals, you'll want to review the progress of your project — and Project can help you. You can use a variety of techniques to review progress, including

  • Views

  • Tables

  • Progress lines

  • Comparing versions of a project

Note

As you review progress, the facts of project management life dictate that you will find problems in your schedule that you need to resolve. Life happens, and reality brings changes to even the most carefully planned schedule. Review Chapters 10 and 11 for techniques you can use to resolve problems you encounter.

Viewing Tasks That Are Slipping

The baseline is the staple of determining if your project is on schedule. You use baseline information to compare your plans to what is actually happening. For any baseline you set for your project, you can quickly and easily identify tasks that are slipping from their planned start dates at any time on any Gantt view. In this example, I use the basic Gantt Chart view.

To display slippage information on the Gantt Chart view, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Gantt Chart view shortcut in the lower-right corner of the Project window.

  2. Click the Gantt Chart Tools Format tab.

  3. In the Bar Styles group, click the Slippage button.
