Project scheduling is distinguished from job shop, flow shop, and other production sequencing problems because of the unique nature of many of the activities that make up a project. In production scheduling, the scheduling problem follows a standard procedure that determines the characteristics of production operations. A scheduling technique that works for one production run may be expected to work equally effectively for succeeding and identical production runs. By contrast, projects usually involve onetime endeavors that may not be duplicated in identical circumstances. In some cases, it may be possible to duplicate the concepts of the whole project or a portion of it.
