Chapter 2

Selection and Prioritization

Abstract

Too often, organizations prematurely shorten or terminate the early phases of a project in order to begin its execution. However, the initiation phase is critical to the success of the project, as it establishes its foundations. This chapter discusses the value of project selection methods and their relationship to planning activities. Readers will learn how to identify a project and determine its goals and objectives. They will discover how to establish deliverables, clarify success criteria, and consider assumptions and risks. Most importantly, the chapter reviews writing a scope statement, a keystone of a successful project.
