11 Managing Research and Innovation

11.1 Introduction

It is common to hear about research and innovation everywhere these days. But rarely do organizations define what they mean. While research may be more discernible, innovation can be quite flaky. Innovation can mean different things to different people. This leads to the following interesting questions for the reader to tackle and reflect upon:

  • Are you an innovator?
  • How do you manage innovation?
  • Who or what is the best innovator that you know of?

The pervasiveness of innovation means that everyone is pursuing it, doing it, talking about it, planning it, professing it, establishing centers for it, and so on and on. But, what is innovation?
