Putting the standard into practice, and why an existing method helps
ISO standards are those produced and issued by the International Standards Organization (ISO). It’s based in Geneva in Switzerland, if you happen to be passing. ISO has a membership which is the main standards body in each country worldwide with only a handful of countries not being members. You may have heard of ISO in the context of organisational quality, but it has a huge number of standards across many areas, and one of those areas is … trumpet fanfare … project management.
This chapter is to explain the main thrust and structure of the ISO project management standard, and I do have to thank the ISO Central Secretariat for its very kind permission to reproduce a diagram and some extracts from the text in this chapter. The latest version of the project management standard is ISO 21500:2012, published in September 2012.
