It can be said that the properties of concrete are studied primarily for the purpose of selection of appropriate mix ingredients, and it is in this light that the various properties of concrete will be considered in this chapter.
In the British usage, the selection of the mix ingredients and their proportions is referred to as mix design. This term, although common, has the disadvantage of implying that the selection is a part of the structural design process.
