KM portals provide access to three types of information:
Structured data
Unstructured data
Tacit knowledge
The differences between these makes the need for different management techniques clear.
Structured Data
Most database applications deal with structured data. Transactional systems, like billing and claims processing, depend on specific pieces of information provided in well-defined formats. These systems support high volumes of activity and require that data not vary from a small range.
