PREFACE

I would not have been able to write this book if I had not been born and raised in South Africa. Due to a unique set of circumstances my consciousness took shape at the intersection of race, class, gender, ethnicity, and culture.

As an Afrikaner woman I had a unique vantage point to see and experience discrimination, both as perpetrator and recipient. I believe my and my parents’ generations of Afrikaners have a collective responsibility for the years of discrimination of Blacks in that country. All White South Africans have that responsibility, including those from British and more recent European descent; however, I cannot speak for or on behalf of them.
