4.5 APPLICATIONS OF COMPARATORS

Apart from being used as amplitude comparators, comparator circuits can be used for many applications. A few applications are presented in this section.

1. Measurement of time delays: In the comparator shown before, if VR1 is the reference level in the first comparator (double differentiator), then a pulse is generated with a peak at t = t1. If VR2 is the reference level set in a second comparator then the pulse is generated with peak at t = t2. Then the time difference between the two pulses is (t2t1) = (VR2VR1)/α where, α is the slope of the input ramp.
