There are two schools of physics. There is a theoretical approach and an experimental. Theoretical physics uses abstractions and models to explain and rationalise things that happen. Experimental physics uses tools to probe the things that we wish to understand.1 A theoretical physicist can develop an idea without the need for any empirical data to prove it.
