Using Timer to Track Time

The previous section discussed the tasks that you must perform to distribute Timer and then import the time data you receive into QuickBooks. This section explains how to use Timer to track time and send the resulting time records to the person running QuickBooks.

Even if your computer has QuickBooks installed replete with its built-in time tracking features, you might prefer to track time using Timer. This standalone program requires some setup, but tracking the time you spend with the Timer stopwatch and switching between different activities during the day is worth the effort.

Installing the Timer on a Computer

The Timer uses an installation wizard so the steps to install the program should be familiar. Here're the installation steps in case an employee isn't as experienced with a computer as you:

  1. As you should with any software installation, close any software programs that're running.

    To ensure a smooth installation, it's also a good idea to stop any antivirus programs.

  2. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the CD or folder on your hard drive that contains the installation files.

  3. Double-click the Install.exe file.

    The installation wizard opens the QuickBooks Pro Timer Setup installation window and displays a Welcome dialog box. Click Next to get to the good stuff.

  4. In the Choose Destination Directory screen, click Browse to select the folder in which you want to install the Timer software.
